Based on the materials of the State Bureau of Investigation, the Office of the Prosecutor General has served notifications of suspicion to three employees of National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) involved in traffic accidents with victims.
In one of the accidents, a law enforcement officer collided with a vehicle traveling on the main road while pulling off of a side road in Kyiv. As a result, the officer's car left the roadway and hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries that led to the amputation of his left lower limb.
In another accident, a law enforcement officer was travelling on the 61st kilometer of the Kyiv-Odesa highway, when he failed to drive at a safe speed while overtaking another vehicle. He drove off the road, causing his vehicle to roll over and collide with a gas station building. As a result of the collision, a passenger in the officer's car suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures, a ruptured spleen and a concussion.
In the third accident, a law enforcement officer was driving a service vehicle at a regulated intersection in Kyiv, when he struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing on a green light. As a result of the collision, the victim sustained moderate bodily injuries.
Based on the results of the pretrial investigation, the Deputy Prosecutor General served notifications of suspicion to all three suspects under Part 2 of Article 286 and Part 1 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violations of the traffic safety rules while driving vehicles, which caused moderate and severe bodily harm to the victims).
The issue of preventive measures for the suspects is currently being decided. The prosecution will request that at least two of suspects should be held in custody.
If the law enforcement officers are found guilty of committing serious crimes, they face up to eight years in prison.
The procedural guidance is provided by the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office and the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor's Office.
