The SBI has found the flight data recorder from the MiG-29 that crashed in the Odesa region

The State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash of the MiG-29 fighter jet in the Odesa region.

The employees of the SBI have found the flight data recorder from a fighter jet that crashed on August 10, 2026, while on a combat mission in the Berezivsky District of the Odesa Region.

The «black box» sustained thermal damage as a result of the fire. Experts are currently working to restore it and retrieve data on the final minutes of the flight.

Investigators are considering several possible causes of the aviation incident. None of them has been definitively confirmed at this time.

The investigation is under the personal supervision of the Director of the State Bureau of Investigation.

«We will make every necessary effort to objectively and as thoroughly as possible determine the causes of this aviation accident. The investigation must provide a clear answer as to exactly what happened during the combat mission and what factors led to it. No theory will be ruled out without a thorough examination», — emphasized Oleksii SUKHACHOV.

Specifically, the technical condition of the missile that the pilot fired at the enemy drone is being inspected, as well as its operational readiness at the time of launch.

Investigators are also examining compliance with the rules governing flight preparation, flight execution, and aircraft operation. They are analyzing the fighter jet’s wreckage, evidence from the crash site, and statements from military personnel.

As a reminder, in the evening of August 10, MiG-29 of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was carrying out a combat mission to destroy enemy drones. An emergency situation arose; the aircraft caught fire, and the pilot lost control.

The pilot managed to eject. His life is not in danger.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the plane crash under Part 2 of Article 416 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of flight rules or rules governing flight preparation, as well as rules governing the operation of aircraft, resulting in a crash.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
