The SBI has changed charges against the former Minister of Energy and Coal Industry, and his subordinate is suspected of misusing state property worth one and a half billion hryvnias
SBI employees served a notice of suspicion to the former head of a department of the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, while the former head of the ministry's qualification was changed. Due to their abuse of office on behalf of one of the gas oligarchs, the state budget suffered losses of almost UAH 1.5 billion.
Investigators found that, following instructions from the head of the ministry, a subordinate head of the Department of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry concluded contracts with the companies of a well-known businessman that were damaging to the state. In particular, in violation of the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution, officials didn't charge businessmen for the operation of state property.
The amount of revenues lost to the budget for the period from May 2017 to December 2020 is UAH 1 billion 488 million.
In February 2023, the former Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine was served with a notice of suspicion in the said criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (negligence).
After further investigation, his suspicion was changed based on Art. 364 (2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (abuse of office), as he committed the crime by prior conspiracy with the former head of a department of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine.
The article provides for a sentence of up to six years in prison.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
