The SBI reported suspicion of one of the leaders of the 501st Marine Battalion, which resulted in 277 soldiers being captured (VIDEO)

SBI employees filed a notice of suspicion of high treason against one of the leaders of the 501st Separate Marine Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who led to the capture of 277 soldiers of the battalion.

Since the end of February 2022, the battalion has been defending the city of Mariupol.

In April of the same year, russian propaganda media spread information that the marines of the 501st battalion had voluntarily surrendered in the besieged city of Mariupol.

According to the investigation, the head of the logistics service of the 501st Battalion betrayed his oath and sided with the enemy. He colluded with the russians and in fact persuaded the commander to surrender. Taking advantage of the difficult situation faced by the defence forces in Mariupol, the traitor encouraged the commander to cease defensive operations and surrender his weapons and personnel. The battalion's 277 soldiers were ordered to relocate, but in reality they were transported to the so-called 'donetsk people's republic'. Because the soldiers were mislead, they did not and could not recognize the illegal nature of the order or the order to surrender.

The SBI issued a decision to close the proceedings against 277 servicemen of the 501st Brigade on suspicion of desertion. This gives the authorised bodies grounds to repair the violated rights of captured marines regarding payments to their relatives.

The investigation also revealed that the head of the logistics service of the 501st Brigade continued his subversive activities after his sabotage in Mariupol. After returning to his hometown of Berdiansk in the Zaporizhzhia area, he began agitating the Ukrainian military to defect to the enemy and to provide him with information on the placement of Ukrainian defense soldiers and equipment for a fee. Between April and June 2022, the investigation identified at least three relevant facts.

The Chief of the Logistics Service of the 501st Logistics Unit of the Ukrainian Navy was served a notice of suspicion of high treason (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The sanction of the article provides for life imprisonment.

The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings is ongoing.

Other persons who may be involved in the crime are being identified.

Procedural guidance is provided by the Specialised Defence Prosecutor's Office of the Prosecutor General's Office.
