The SBI served a notice of suspicion of abuse of power to a platoon commander of a military unit in Zhytomyr region. The junior lieutenant beat a conscript in a training centre.

The "educational conversation" with the soldier was allegedly for being drunk. The officer beat him with his hands and feet, and the soldier sustained minor injuries.

After the video of the beating was posted on the Internet, the SBI opened a criminal investigation. The soldier pleaded guilty.

Currently, the junior lieutenant has been served a notice of suspicion of abuse of power committed under martial law (Part 5 of Article 426-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The issue of choosing a measure of restraint is being decided.

The commander was suspended from office for the duration of the investigation.

He may face up to 12 years in prison.

The Zhytomyr Specialised Military and Defence Prosecutor's Office is providing procedural supervision.
