The State Bureau of Investigation immediately started an investigation into the crash of a Mirage-2000 fighter jet in Volyn region
Immediately after the official announcement, the State Bureau of Investigation started an investigation into the crash of a Mirage-2000 fighter jet in Volyn region.
The accident occurred in the evening of July 22, 2025, at one of the region's airfields during a combat flight mission.
Immediately after the accident, investigators and operations officers of the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigation in Lviv arrived at the scene. To ensure a swift, comprehensive and objective investigation, a special investigation team was created from among the most experienced employees of the Territorial Department and the Central Office of the State Bureau of Investigation, who have experience in investigating military aviation accidents.
It has been preliminarily established that after takeoff, the pilot informed the flight controller of a critical electronics malfunction. The plane crashed in a deserted area and sank into a flooded crater in marshy terrain. Thanks to the pilot's professional actions, casualties and damage on the ground were avoided.
The pilot ejected in time and was quickly found by the search and rescue team. The soldier is in stable condition and he has received the necessary assistance.
The accident has been classified under Part 2 of Article 416 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of flight rules or preparation for them, resulting in a plane crash.
Investigators have inspected the scene, seized official documentations and other material evidence, as well as interviewed witnesses. Interrogations of responsible persons, technical examinations, and analysis and decryption of data from the flight recorder are planned.
The investigation is paying particular attention to the technical condition of the aircraft, compliance with flight preparation regulations, and the effectiveness of control by responsible persons.
At the same time, an official investigation is underway at the military unit to establish all the causes and conditions that could have led to the emergency situation.
The investigation is under special supervision by the leadership of the State Bureau of Investigation, given the strategic importance of aviation security in a state of martial law.
The procedural guidance is provided by the Volyn Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Western Region.
