The State Bureau of Investigation blocked the systematic theft of thousands of liters of fuel from a military unit in the Chernihiv region
The employees of the State Bureau of Investigation, together with the National Police of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine, stopped the illegal activities of a group of military officials from one of the units in the Chernihiv region who were systematically stealing fuel.
According to the investigation, between August 2024 and July 2025, officials from the unit regularly appropriated gasoline and diesel fuel intended for military equipment and sold it to third parties. In total, they stole and sold about 13,000 liters of fuel.
The organizer of the scheme was the head of the unit’s supply warehouse. He involved the unit’s platoon commander and the head of the fuel and lubricants service in the deal.
To conceal the shortages, the three individuals knowingly entered false information into official documents, artificially inflating the amounts of fuel allegedly used in equipment. In this way, part of the fuel was accumulated as surplus.
During inspections, they transferred fuel to other tanks or fuel trucks to prevent it from being detected.
These actions caused hundreds of thousands of hryvnias in losses to the state.
The actions of the group members were classified under:
- Part 4 of Article 410 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — appropriation of military property under martial law;
- Part 3 of Article 28 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — commission of a crime by an organized group.
Currently, three suspects have been served with notifications of suspicion.
The articles provide for up to 15 years of imprisonment with possible deprivation of military rank and confiscation of property.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing: law enforcement officers are identifying other possible accomplices and taking measures to compensate the state for the damage caused.
The procedural guidance is provided by the Desnianska Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Defense of the Central Region.
